Turn Hopes into Goals

Turn Hopes into Goals

Hope is a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. Hope is a feeling of trust. Hope to desire with expectation of obtainment or fulfillment. It is important to have hope. In fact, I make it a point to tell people I hope. I hope they are doing well! I hope I can help in any way I can! Hope is important when you want to stay encouraged as you seek the best out of life.

Be watchful. There is a hope that’s dead. A hope that is full of doubt and unbelief. You’ve heard it. “I hope it works out.” “I hope I can figure it out.” Be sure to avoid that kind of hope.

Hopes and dreams can motivate us, but they’re often too vague which makes it hard to build a plan to reach them. For example, most people say they want to make a better life for their children. To execute you have to talk about the specifics of what “a better life” means for you, in order to build a plan to get there. You must work on the whats and hows. What you have to do and how you are going to do it. Once you do that you can create a plan that can be divided into many small goals.

When you set goals, you can:

  • Work toward making your future better

  • Prioritize how you spend your money so that it goes toward things that really matter to you

  • Measure and track your progress toward getting the things you want out of life

  • Take pride in bettering your life and the life of your family

To set goals could be called to starting point of all of your achievement. Ask anyone who had done something great in life and they will tell you about everything they had to do to get there. To think that you will get there aimlessly is foolish. I believe you would be what my mentor Mr. Shell calls a new fool. Don’t be foolish. Get really clear about what you want to accomplish and how you’re going to get there by setting goals.

How do you set a goal? The best goals are SMART goals. Goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time sensitive. You should be able to track your progress toward meeting the goal. Your goal may be a stretch for you, but it should not be extreme or impossible. Set goals that matter to you and are a priority in your life. Goals should have a clearly defined target or deadline date.

What can you do today?

  • List your values to help you think about what is important to you and your family.

  • Brainstorm a list of dreams and goals. Remember, dreams are aspirational and usually vague. Goals are specific things you can achieve to help you reach your dreams.

  • Create a SMART goal from one or two items on your list of goals. Write down what makes this goal specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound.

After you’ve written down your SMART goals, take a look at the “Putting goals into action” tool to create an easy-to-follow plan for achieving your goals. You can find this tool on our financial worksheet page.
